Registering a car in Ireland — most commonly after importing one from the UK or elsewhere — means paying Vehicle Registration Tax based on Revenue's own valuation of the vehicle (OMSP), its CO2 emissions, and a separate NOx emissions levy on top. This calculator covers Category A private cars only, using the 20-band CO2 table and NOx tiers that have been in force since 2022.
VRT is calculated as OMSP × the CO2 band rate for that vehicle, with the lowest band carrying a €140 minimum charge regardless of value. A separate NOx levy is then added: €5 per mg/km for the first 40 mg/km, €15/mg for the next 40, and €25/mg beyond that, capped at €600 for petrol and €4,850 for diesel — if you cannot provide NOx evidence at your VRT appointment, Revenue applies the maximum charge for your fuel type automatically. Electric vehicles pay no NOx levy at all and get up to €5,000 off the CO2-based VRT when OMSP is €40,000 or under, tapering to zero by €50,000 — a relief extended to 31 December 2026.
OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) is Revenue's own valuation of what your exact vehicle — make, model, year, mileage, and condition — would sell for in Ireland, not what you paid for it in the UK or elsewhere. It's usually the single biggest source of surprise at a VRT appointment.
Revenue applies the maximum NOx charge for your fuel type automatically — €600 for petrol, €4,850 for diesel — so it's worth getting the Certificate of Conformity with the real figure before your appointment if the car has low NOx emissions.
