Revenue doesn't know about your rent, your GP visits, or the days you worked from home — none of it reaches your tax record unless you actively claim it. Tick what applies to you and see what it's worth, including going back to the oldest year still open.
How it's calculated
Each credit or relief uses its own rule: some are a fixed amount off your tax bill, some are worth 20% (or 40% for nursing homes) of what you spent, and some reduce your taxable income at your marginal rate. In 2026 you can still claim as far back as 2022 — four years — through Revenue's myAccount in a single session.
Frequently asked
How far back can I claim?
Four years. In 2026, the oldest year still open is 2022 — so unclaimed rent credit, remote working relief, or medical expenses from 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 can all still be claimed alongside your 2026 return.
Do I need receipts for medical expenses?
Yes — keep receipts for GP visits, prescriptions, physiotherapy, and non-routine dental work (a completed Med 2 form from your dentist). Revenue can ask for evidence, though you don't need to submit it upfront when claiming through myAccount.
Is the Rent Tax Credit only for private renters?
It covers rent paid for your own home, a second home you rent for work or study, or rent paid for a student child, but not rent paid to a local authority, under the Housing Assistance Payment, or to a housing body — and not where you're already claiming Rent-a-Room relief on the same property.
